Phonics and Spelling

For children in Year 1, we use the Raising stars spelling scheme to support our work in phonics and learning to spell the common exception words.

For children in Years 2-6, we use Read, Write, Inc spelling strategies:

  • Revisit and Review: Looking back of tricky spellings, addressing errors and revisiting aspects of phase 5 and 6 phonics and revisiting spelling rules.
  • Introduce and Teach: Using strategies to teach 10 weekly spellings which include age expected words from the National Curriculum word lists and those words which follow a particular spelling rule/pattern.
  • Practise and Apply: Using games, memory tricks and spelling tasks to learn the words and investigate other words which use the same spelling rule.
  • Dictation: Writing the words in sentences to understand the context in which they are used.
